Review of Rampage (2018) by Hayden F — 16 Apr 2018
My first thought after watching this was, WOW Hollywood finally got a giant monster movie right. I have no idea why this has gotten mixed reviews, it's honostly one of my favorite movies in year. The monsters are absolutely gruesome and animalistic, they have plenty of personality. It's the interactions the monsters give that show so much, they're not just giant animals they have na message and thoughts it's just phenomonal. Another thing is the sound, watch this in a theater with a great sound system, you can literally feel the monsters roars. The depth of these monsters is just so expansive.
The camera angles in this are seriously some of the best cinematography I've seen. They don't hide the monsters because of size like Hollywood likes to do, they embrace this. There is one closeup with the wolf's face next to a soldier that is just perfect.
The human characters are also great. Dwayne Johnson and Jeffrey Dean Morgan are simply great here. I was please try suprised that the villainess, played by Malin Ackerman, was great and very easy to despise. Movies are best when EVERYONE is having fun, it's great to sit back and watch a product of simple love, love for monster movies. There was no feel that this movie was stuck to a formula, it was what the creators wanted and that's truly inspiring. It feels like one of the few movies nowadays that doe's not care about money, it simply wants you to have fun and it certainly succeds.
