Review of Ramona and Beezus (2010) by Keith G — 15 Nov 2010
I was really worried that "Ramona and Beezus" would be a movie dependent on a steady barrage of kiddie mischief and cliched slapstick comedy. Instead I saw one of the best non-animated family films to hit the theaters in years.
The fact that it's a FAMILY film is important. This isn't just a movie that will appeal strictly to children but to adults alike. "Ramona and Beezus" is a breath of fresh air and is a rare Hollywood film that actually centers around a strong, loving family.
The young leads give nice performances. Joey King is perfectly cast as Ramona as never comes across as annoying or irritating. Her character is written very well and balanced. One moment you find yourself laughing at her exploits only to have your heart strings tugged a few scenes later.
Selena Gomez also gives a nice performance and looks capable of shaking off the Disney Channel sitcom actress stereotype. The story does start off a little slow but soon picks up and actually wraps you up in this sweet family's home as well as their tougher circumstances.
Director Elizabeth Allen should be commended as she creates a picture that is funny as well as warm and tender. This film was a pleasant surprise and as a father I was thrilled to see the portrayal of a dad who loves and takes care of his family.
A little slow out of the gate and occasional sappy moments are all that I can really say bad about the film. I admit it, I teared up in some scenes, felt the "daddy pride" in others, and laughed as well.
Take your family and enjoy "Ramona and Beezus" together. If it doesn't make you want to just grab and hug your children, I don't know what will.
