Review of Rambo III (1988) by Robert B — 04 Jun 2009
You'd think with the seriousness of the First film, the Fantasy of the 2ns film, where could they possibly go with the 3rd. A little of both. Set in the Russian- Afghan War it takes on a serious subject but the action is so cartoonish with Stallone running around the Afghan mounatains with his shirt off that it undermines the "serious" monlogues of how the Russians are killing the Afghans.
I remember watching Stallone on a TV how pluggung this movie and a lady who said she was from Afghanistan thanking him for making the film. As a ploitical statement flick it barely comes off better than Segal's ON Deadly Ground.
The director did a good job with what e had to work with but the movie just seems to be falling apart at the seems. It's odd seeing the film some 20 years later with American forces now fighting in Afghanistan against some of the descendents of the Mujadeen (the heroes in the film.
) In the box set theres a really good VAM piece that talks about the different factions in Afghanistan today. Check it out.
