Review of Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018) by Ben C — 23 Jan 2019
Put simply, Ralph Breaks the Internet lacks the charm of the first film. And this changes the whole feeling of the film.
Regardless of the films intentions, Ralph comes across as a creepy man child which really hurts the message the film tries to get across, which I think was supposed to be that even though you want to spend time with someone, you have to be OK letting them experience things on their own. However because you essentially have a grown man who has a strange obsession with a small child this ends up just creeping me out. If this story was the other way around with the grown man teaching a child an important life lesson, I think this would have been a lot better, but alas that is not the case.
I also found it quite cringy to watch with the slew of out of place references and cameo's that just seemed so forced in there and none of these cameo's really felt like the characters they were supposed to represent.
The film didn't really have a 'villain' as you would define one usually. It focused more on the adventure and the emotions of its protagonists. As I've said before, Ralph's emotions are far more creepy than they should be and because of this I found that I really couldn't enjoy his emotional victory so to speak. I just feel he went from really creepy to slightly less creepy which is hard to classify as a win.
The animation quality was there and the music was fun, which saves this from a 1/2 star rating. But I really cannot recommend watching this film unless you really like cringy kids movies.
