Review of Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018) by Jordan P — 01 Dec 2018
It was so refreshing to see a very self-aware, self-deprecating film that did very little to copy it's predecessor. I'm not much into the whole feminism gig, but I did like that the film had strong female roles throughout.
As an avid peruser of the world wide web, I loved all of the shoutouts to internet history, most of which if I listed them would spoil the surprise. This film does exactly what Ready Player One did right, and avoided everything that Incredibles 2 got wrong.
The story itself spoke to me because I've had many friends and family go their separate ways over the years, and it's both difficult to let them go, and then it's difficult to fill the void of not having them there.
You need people around you that care about you, and sometimes it's difficult to get them to stay for any length of time. At the same time, you can't hold them back with co-dependency either.
It's not an easy subject or an easy film, and in a lot of ways it was a therapy session for those who saw it. The animation didn't stagnate, the inclusion of song was very clever (though I wouldn't personally try to recommend facial tattoos to children, but that's just me) and this look at the newer Disney isn't as bleak as previous entries have made me feel about the direction they are heading.
I'd recommend this film to anyone.
