Review of Raising Victor Vargas (2003) by Emily B — 11 Mar 2008
A simple story about a boy, his siblings and grandmother, his friend and the girls that he and his friend are interested in. It's set in an ordinary urban neighborhood with ordinary kids. Nothing terribly dramatic happens, there are no drugs or violence, just struggles to understand each other and get along.
It's funny and painful and sweet, one of the most "realistic" and absorbing movies I can think of, not just one of the best teen movies I've seen. It feels like a glimpse into a real lives, into the bluster and insecurity of adolescence, the frustrating conflicts with family that you need but can't always talk to.
