Review of Raise the Red Lantern (1991) by Andrew W — 03 Jun 2008
The juxtaposition of bright, vibrant imagery to the deeply tragic and ultimately hopeless tale told in "Raise the Red Lantern," is what makes the film so effective and moving. The characters are sharply complex and the story is compelling in its sense of fatalism.
There can be no doubt as to the intended outcome of such a story, from the very first shot we can sense the tragedy, and yet all the while Zhang never succumbs to manipulative story telling, but rather lets the tragedy exist as it is, and move us as it will.
