Visually beautiful movie that explores the lives of concubines in 1920s China. Songlian is an educated girl forced to be the 4th concubine in a family of strict customs and traditions. Tragic, but as I've grown older (first saw it as a teenager) I've grown to be more annoyed with Songlian than anything.
Still makes for a very good movie though.
