Review of Raise the Red Lantern (1991) by Manuel S — 20 Oct 2010
Excellent drama. The young lady became the fourth mistress of a rich chinese man, only to find that a complex plotting and hypocrisy surrounds her daily life, like living masks wear by people according to their personal interests and nothing else.
Rites and rules in the house live only to satisfy the master, and sins and lies are hardly punished. The photograph is simple but great, as the buildings, typical clothes and red lanterns, give it a special shape of coldness and a bit of sadness.
