This road-trip movie about an autistic savant and his callow brother is far from seamless, but Barry Levinson's direction is impressive, and Oscar-calibur performances from Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman add to its appeal.

The first 2 times I saw this film were under the pretense that my brain was normal.

Seeing this after being diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, (Autism Light), gives me a new perspective on Raymond Babbit's behavior and Charley's persistant misunderstandings.

While Raymond is called "higher functioning" during his evaluation, his symptoms look quite severe compared to autistic people in my local area.

I can't help but ponder about the film's appeal if Raymond WAS NOT a gifted SAVANT.

On a ligher note, there's some irony in Valeria Golino's next memorable role, a TOP GUN parody called "HOT SHOTS".
