Review of Rain Man (1988) by Sidney S — 02 Jun 2012
A powerful story with smooth direction by Barry Levinson and unforgettable performances by its lead cast. Rain Man is the story of a selfish yuppie whom after the death of his father is left nothing, his will goes to an autistic brother that he never knew he had in an astonishing performance by Dustin Hoffman.
Cruise was straight up awesome as Charlie Babbitt, he showed the greed, and selfishness of his character along with the annoyance of having to take care of his brother, he then resorts to using him (by having him count cards for him in Vegas) which ironically leads him to share a connection.
Hoffman won an Oscar for his performance as the autistic Raymond Babbitt, from each and every little quirk he does from his head tilts the way he spoke, stuttered and walked he draws you in with his breathtaking performance.
Raymond's character showed the intellect that truly amazed Charlie and what bonded the two brothers in this road trip. No doubt Hoffman's best performance and one of Cruise's all time greatest roles.
A masterwork of film.
