Review of Rain Man (1988) by Ellis W — 21 Jun 2014
The narrative road trip structure of Rain Man is fairly generic - arrogant and selfish guy meets sweet relative/stranger, selfish guy gradually changes his ways with his new company. But the strengths lie with the power of the subject matter of autism, and raises many questions and debates about just why they don't need to be treated as inferior or beyond help.
Tom Cruise does a terrific job of going from this pig headed impatient businessman to a well mannered and understanding friend and relative who can make connections with ease. Dustin Hoffman is irresistibly charming in a role which requires more than just acting - a requirement of complete psychological transformation, as not looking your co-star in the eye throughout the whole project will have been a fair challenge.
