Review of Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) by Andrew L — 06 Nov 2014
This is a great movie. Raiders of the Lost Ark is only the beginning of what is really the standalone adventure series. This was the first time seeing this movie as an adult, and while I didn't appreciate the Indiana Jones movies as a kid, I can see now why people held these movies at a high standard.
Unlike a lot of movies, Raiders immediately starts without the fancy title screens and that allows the adrenaline to start flowing and the excitement of adventure to begin. A lot of technical stunts and camerawork is a bit outdated nowadays but the thing that still makes this movie great is the sense of adventure. At times, you forget that you are watching a movie and it feels like you are right there with Indiana Jones while fighting the bad guys and falling into many snake pits along the way.
As for the acting, it is really the best it could possibly be for a movie of this genre. The characters are their for a reason, but a lot of the focus is placed on the setting, which is able to tell a story of its own, which is something that action and adventure movies have a hard time doing today. Each actor/actress does their job and thankfully, it is not over the top like other performances of this genre. The best way to see any Indiana Jones movie is in the theater. Definitely worth to see it in theaters.
