Review of Raging Bull (1980) by Nathan M — 10 Feb 2012
Raging Bull marks the precise point where Scorsese's stylistic vision crystallized and shed its roughness and flaws. The film is quite the visual feast with slickness in its binary tones and Thelma Schoonmaker's energizing and instantly recognizable editing.
Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci both give great performances. The film really illustrates the two settings of an unstable man, destroying faces in the ring and his own life outside. And when bodies get beaten, Scorsese clearly has a bit of fun, with spurting cuts and brutality galore! The only flaw I saw was some distracting prosthetic work and some unconvincing age casting, but other than that, the film is stylistically watertight.
