Review of Raging Bull (1980) by Trevor R — 11 Apr 2013
Maybe Scorcese's best film, and almost certainly DeNiro's best performance. "Raging Bull" is a visceral tour-de-force that just knocked me sideways. The script and supporting cast are terrific (any time Pesci was on screen, I was delighted), and the black and white cinematography is gorgeous and perfectly suited to the material.
The boxing sequences are unbelievably brutal, with impeccable editing, sound design, and photography working together to create an intense, hellish atmosphere full of snarling roars and thunderous moments of impact.
This movie simply strikes at the heart of who and what Jake LaMotta is, and is easily the best biopic ever made. Film students should study every frame of this movie. An amazing, brilliant piece of work.
