Review of Raging Bull (1980) by Sean W — 19 Jul 2014
I'm not fond of this film. It's uncomfortable and upsetting, but as a piece of film making virtuosity, it's incredible. It may be the best pure character study ever committed to film, and the rather detestable Jake LaMotta (as presented) is unsettlingly intriguing.
Who said a character had to be likable, sympathetic or even relatable to be compelling. Might be De Niro's best performance. The fact that it's shot in black and white, when there's nothing black and white about it's characters is nicely ironic.
