Possessing a few stylistic production choices that can quite easily get on my nerves (shaky camera!), the film really works due to the wonderful performances that bring these characters to life. No-one is particularly 'likeable' (whatever that really means!) but the dramatic tone is often intense without feeling forced or contrived.

The relationship between Kym, Rachel and their mother for example stands out as being completely believable; fleshed out with enough information to understand how they've got to this point but not banging you over the head with information about past events in order to re-confirm the already set up dynamic. This can be said about almost all the major relationships within the film and contributes to a very believable dysfunctional family.

The films music stretches the boundaries of keeping everything dia.

The performances and writing are really strong and the direction is subtle, which is exactly what this kind of film needs.
