Review of Rachel Getting Married (2008) by Mark D — 19 Nov 2009
Really not enjoyable to watch at all. I felt sick by the end of it. I don't understand why critics are so crazy about Debra Winger's--who I love--performance; the character is sketchy and fragmented, and I never felt like Jonathan Demme (who I love) made a full statement with her.
The movie itself is more like a really long sketch...Then there are these wierd high drama moments that fling from left field--like Kym (Anne Hathaway) wrecking a car and Kym getting into a slap-fest with her mother.
This movie went from thoughtful slice-of-life piece to Tyler Perry movie just like a car going from 0 to 60. The saving grace is the MUSIC, the music, the music. It pours from every crease, every seam, and it is the part of the movie that is truly genius.
All that being said, Hathaway did not disappoint. But the best performance in the film, to me, came from Anna Deavere Smith whose soft, colorful peformance is the only fully developed--besides Hathaway's--peformance in the film.
