Review of Race (2016) by Greg B — 22 Feb 2016
"Race" tells the story of track and field Olympiad Jesse Owens. His coach (Jason Sudeikis) molds him as an athlete to become the fastest, best athlete he can be. Owens is set to compete in the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin amidst the backdrop of the oppressive Hitler regime.
The games have political and social implications and some even suggest America boycott the games so as not to show support for the Third Reich. As an inspiring underdog story goes, the movie is fine, but it relies too heavily on derivative sports movie cliches in its execution.
This period piece does nothing to transcend the formulaic approach that other sports movies take, lending a bit of predictability to the plot. I enjoyed the film but wish it had not stuck so religiously to sports movie cliches ----------------------------------------- B.
