Review of Race (2016) by Frances H — 05 Aug 2017
An effective bio-pic, but according to Jesse Owens himself, Hitler did see and congratulate him after his win, just not in public. But then FDR did not even send him so much as a telegram or letter to congratulate him.
As the film showed, Owens and his wife had to enter hotels and restaurants by the service entrances and he could not stay in the hotels, but Sammy Davis, Jr. couldn't do so a quarter of a century later either.
And even staying in a black rooming house in Pittsburgh, Owens was so strapped for money that he gave three of his medals to the owner to pay for his stay. The fourth he gave to Bill "Bo Jangles" Robinson, his best friend.
I sold for a million and a half at auction in 2013. Two of the ones he gave to the wording house owner were sold two years later. The last one has never surfaced. Owens told the Germans that he lost them, and they replaced them.
Those replacement medals are in the museum of Ohio State University. Jesse gave them to his alma mater.
