Review of Race (2016) by Dave R — 23 Feb 2016
When I was a kid I did a report on Jesse Owens in grade school so I have always had an interest in him. Four gold medals during one Olympic games is an amazing feat, but to do it in front of Adolf Hitler himself is even more amazing to me.
The movie Race does a pretty good job of depicting the athletic events as they happen, but really a poor job of going inside the head of Owens. There's a part of the movie that goes on with the struggle he was having with deciding whether to go to Germany or not, but that's as deep as it gets.
We don't have to sit through the training montage or anything like that, but I'm not sure we got the whole story. Jason Sudeikis might be most pleasant surprise of all here, as he does a solid job in a dramatic role.
However, without much character depth, Race is just a normal run of the mill sports biopic.
