Review of Rabid (1977) by Emily A — 14 Sep 2007
A classic of its kind, it could almost be a companion piece to Dawn of The Dead. Cronenberg's target shifts throughout the film from unethical surgeons to the Freudian male anxiety of the sexually predatory female and vagina dentata.
to the breakdown of urban society in the face of a mass outbreak, so it's abit more unfocused than later works like Dead Ringers, although all Cronenberg's regular motifs are present and correct.
The low budget look and minimal use of incidental scoring give the film a compellingly bleak documentary feel. The ending is a total downer!
