Review of Rabid (1977) by Carl N — 15 Jun 2009
After learning of the untimely passing of the brilliant Marilyn Chambers. I decided to watch this film again in tribute. Would have been easy to watch one of her adult films but this seemed a more appropriate choice.
It is clear from her performance in this film that the girl sure knew how to act. It makes you wonder what could have been had she donmore "mainstream" movies? But I digress. This is one of my favourite David Cronenberg films.
Low budget yes, but it has such a twisted gritty story chocked full of political and social context you forget about the budget. There are some good scares and some great grotesque images. The climax to this film is distressing and disturbing and the imagery will stay with you for a while.
The only downside to Rabid is the use of library music. When any scare moments happen you hear the same jarring chord that was used by Monty Python for The Spanish Inquisition sketch. I kept expecting Michael Palin to burst in on the scene.
But then again NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition!
