Review of Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002) by Roni M — 24 Jun 2007
This film deals with a subject most often neglected - the colonization of Austraila, the genocide of the aborigines and the horrible effects of it up till today. The white man, as usual, find himself superior to whoever he thinks is beneath him - people with a different skin color, women, other species or children - and with that follows that he think that he can do whatever he wants to them.
In Australia the british empire decided that "the halfcaste", people of mixed blood - a result of white mans rape - should be "cleansed" of it´s black genes. In this film we follow three little aborigin girls that escape from a "halfcaste-camp" to get back to their home.
White Australia deemed them to white to leave them with their moms. A heartbreaking adventure of a 14 year old girls treamendous will to live free beneath the stars in harmony with nature. A story that unfortunately is seldom told and of a kind that make me more than embaressed to be a part of a white civilization that have stoled everything they built their societies and wealth on.
A must-see even if I miss a wider perspective on imperialism and the history of oppression in Australia.
