Review of Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002) by Jenni M — 29 Jan 2011
Jennifer McGuire 01/29/11.
It was a very moving movie and I most certainly could not do what Molly did for her sisters Her bravery, and courage was amazingly noble. I, for one, could not walk over 800 miles through rough terrain and survive. The 3 sisters were torn from their families in a political misfortune involving an Australian law. Through out the movie I was constantly reminded of America's past rivalries between races and felt ashamed. I also had to wonder where the law and government enforcement was in this time? I cannot imagine in the 1970's children were still be taken, but then again there are countries even today that allow human trademarking. There were also some unanswered questions in this movie about the father, "tracker," and his daughter who were made to live in Moore River. I would like to know if he ever get to leave with his daughter or leave at all? I would also like to know how Daisy died and if she died young or at an older age? The movie showed great examples of indigenous religion. One example was the grandmother hitting herself in the head with the rock, a lot of indigenous religions show physical damage as emotional pain. For my religion, Christianity, I know from the bible that people tore their clothes as a sign of immense grief, or anger from an incident or towards a person. Another sign was when the mother found out her daughters were close to coming home; the mother and grandmother sat out all day and chanted around a fire. I'm not sure in their culture what that meant but I can guess that it was some sort of prayer for a safe reunion of the family. The movie was very good, not my personal first choice but I am glad that I watched it and will recommend it to other people I know.
I am also looking forward to finding the book for a future personal reading assignment of my own and hope that it gives more details or insight to those questions I have written above.
