There is a lot to like in Mitchell's nuanced and unsentimental portrait of a suburban couple's marriage disintegrating after their child's death but whatever sympathy it invoked in me evaporated whenever its unrecognisable star, Kidman, came on the screen.

For, while her new gob could have aided her in her portrayal of a woman holding back her emotions, Nicole's botox doesn't allow so much as the slightest lip-quiver or brow-furrow to indicate what lay beneath her character's inability to grieve.

The support cast are more than adequate though, especially Eckhart whose assured performance as the love-starved husband should cement his burgeoning leading man status. While there are comedic touches and a tear jerked here and there, the movie's flaw is in the casting of The Actress Formerly Known as Nichol whose future career must be question now in light of her current eerie facade.
