Review of Raavanan (2010) by Rajthilak L — 19 Jun 2010
What brilliant acting by Vikram! Splendid characterisation, beautiful cinematography that captures the lushness of the locales and mesmerising music take the cake. Rather than coming across as an evil soul, Raavana (vikram) is portrayed as a vulnerable, aggressive, funny and humane character whom you can't help but love by the end of the film.
Though I don't like the fact that Ram's character is speckled with shades of black (despite having ogled Prithviraj throughout the movie), I loved the fact that the characterisation attempts to point out that no man is either completely good or evil, as in the epic.
But why did Aishwariya Rai have to think so much before each dialogue? Her dialogue delivery was pretty halting and not at all spontaneous. Though her stunts, lack of usual maniacal laughter, pretty clothes and grace are much appreciated, her portrayal of Sita leaves much to be desired.
Sita falling in love with Raavana? Subtle shades, very subtle. Loved that, too. Prabhu as Kumbhakarna was..suited, but predictable. Priyamani's character was well-etched, she could've lived longer though.
Karthik was delightful and funny. Though what lingers at the end of the day is the sound of music..
