Review of Quo Vadis (1951) by Tom H — 02 Sep 2009
Quo vadis? Where are you going, Lord? In the apocryphal Acts of Peter, St Peter meets a vision of Jesus as Peter is fleeing from likely crucifixion in Rome. Peter asks Jesus the question, "Where are you going, Lord?" Jesus' answer, "I am going to Rome to be crucified again" ("Eo Romam iterum crucifigi"), prompts Peter to turn back to Rome to continue his ministry & eventually become a martyr crucified upside down at the Vatican Hill.
What I really liked about this movie is St Peter & St Paul appearing in the movie & teaching in Rome. Wonderful! The Roman Emperor Nero (Peter Ustinov) sang & played his lyre while half of Rome burned & blamed it on the Christians with their Doomsday Fire & Brimstone prophecies, thus persecuting the Christians who dare to suggest a Jewish carpenter is God above the Divinity of the Roman Emperor.
Nero throws the Christians to the Lions at the Coliseum, burns them at the stake, crucifies St Peter & decapitates St Paul (not shown in the movie).
