Review of Quiz Show (1994) by Noah S — 17 Aug 2007
A four star show that I bumped up one more, because it deals with issues that should be addressed (especially in our day and age now), and there is a real dearth of those movies now. While we can look at it as an insightful nostalgic fact-based look into our past, we should realise that we now live in the aftermath of this explosion. Are we faring better? Or are we faring worse? One of the most memorable lines for me from the movie, 'Television is going to get us all'.
What makes this show more impressive is how it wraps up a potent message in a medium with strong entertainment value. When it springs tension on you, it is palpable. When it sics drama on you, you can't help but be moved. Sometimes I almost feel that the acting is forced... but on my second viewing I take it back. I never expected such an unknown cast to turn in such a performance, and my reservations were only my doubts.
The only downer about this film is that it's too high brow for younger audience members, and while that can't really be helped, it is a pity. This is a message that should be heard and understood as soon as possible, but I suspect that it may fade away into the anonymity of... television and movies. Iconic, isn't it?
