Whatever the real Marquis de Sade may have been like, Geoffrey Rush gives the audience a roguish enough character that makes him at once seductive and endearing. Kate Winslet delivers her performance with aplomb, as usual (is she ever bad? like, EVER?), as do Joaquin Phoenix and Michael Caine.
A film that is both a slap in the face and a mischievous wink.
