Excellent film. After studying some of the Marquis' works in school, I finally watched this, and am so glad I did. However loose the film plays with several facts at points is irrelevant; this is the movie about the Marquis de Sade, his life and art and the legacy of both.
Fantastic performances all around-- Joaquin Phoenix is astounding, Kate Winslet deeply affecting, Geoffrey Rush perfect, Michael Caine perfect... an excellent script and direction, to top it all off.
