Review of Quills (2000) by María A — 11 Feb 2012
An artfully rendered and thoroughly entertaining film on the repressive social conditions in late 1700s France. At minimum, it explores the tendency of repression to spur audacious rebellion in a general human sense.
Visceral, sensual, and quite funny, Quills manages to provide an engaging and voluptuous showcase for Geoffrey Rush's loony potential. Kate Winslet, Joaquin Phoenix, and Michael Caine are also in top form.
The look of the film is also very lush, presenting a convincing enough portrait of the times. Mentmore Towers (Wayne Manor from Batman Begins) even makes an appearance.
