Review of Queen of the Desert (2015) by Mary F — 11 Dec 2018
This movie is about the life of archaeologist Gertrude Bell who was a strong, intelligent and independent woman. She acquired exceptional skills in diplomacy for which she became famous. In the movie however, the central theme are Gertrude's troubled relationships with men that are likely not historically accurate.
She twice falls for a quite mentally unstable man and the problems that develop from these relationships build the main plot. Her diplomatic skills are more of a sub-plot. If Gertrude Bell would have been a man the movie would have build around diplomatic interactions and would have made her intelligence and her strength the central theme.
Unfortunately, because she is a woman these aspects are almost completely missing. However, Nicole Kidman is a great actor and the scenery is stunning, so I give 3 stars.
