Review of Queen of Katwe (2016) by Christopher R — 02 Oct 2016
I'm surprised more people don't compare Queen of Katwe to the 90s film Searching For Bobby Fisher. They are the same basic story, child unexpectedly shows gift for chess and adults worry how to deal with this gift, but because of the completely different background of the child in these films the conflict is startlingly different.
The question that anybody watching Queen of Katwe should be asking is how many gifted people do we lose to poverty because they do not have the chance to make the most of their gifts. That just seemed to be everywhere in the subtext of Mira Nair's film.
Its something a lot more people should be thinking about.
