Review of Queen Margot (1994) by Evan M — 03 Nov 2007
The poster is misleading; this movie is also about the French Wars of Religion/St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre.
Not that it's terribly realistic, but the book it's based on by Dumas attempted realism (even if director Chereau added a New Wave (sp?) slant). Of course the dialogue/characters are fictionalized. Charles IX is portrayed as an unstable train wreck, until he inexplicably transforms in a good way. Why? Because after he's saved from death by the Huguenot (Protestant minority) Henry of Navarre the religious hatred that's poisoned his mind so far is shattered. Just a theory...
Regardless, its a beautiful film, and I'll see anything a young Jean-Hughes Anglade was in for now on. Enjoy!!!
