Review of Queen Margot (1994) by Settimio P — 24 Sep 2009
I enjoyed watching this film as the sets looked accurate and I was impressed with the size of the production. I was also in awe at Adjani's beauty which seemed to match her craft as an actor, she was supported by a stellar cast, among which I appreciated in particular Anglande and Lisi.
I found the story powerful but I was unconvinced by some jumps in the evolution of Adjani's character. She is first portrayed as a fickle and superficial girl and her transition to loyal and strong woman happens with seemingly little explication.
It is customary of such epics to prefer big scenes and adherence to historical facts than attention to personal development and I resented the lack of further insight in the characters' actions (why does Henriette decide to stay behind in France?).
Nonetheless I participated in the narration of events as this seemed a story worth knowing about, and that is credit to Chéreau.
