Review of Queen Christina (1934) by Nate W — 21 Jun 2011
As far as studio-manufactured biopics go, "Queen Christina" is a pretty decent one. Greta Garbo commands the screen with her vibrant performance as the beloved Swedish Monarch of the 17th century.
It's clear that she wears the pants in her country, and she literally does in the film, making her quite a distinctive costumee. Her romantic leading man, the then struggling John Gilbert, can barely hold his own against her, an ironic reversal from their silent film pairings prior.
Some smart editing and flourishes of humour liven up what might have been stuffy and dry.
