Review of Queen Christina (1934) by Antonius B — 12 Jul 2018
Curious movie about the Swedish queen of the 17th century. Garbo delivers an unusual performance, but her mysterious aura is still with her. The story is highly fictitious to accommodate the needs and tastes of the modern society, and indeed, who would be interested in a queen abdicating her throne to convert to Catholicism.
The final shot is very powerful and serves as a final touch in the transformation of the heroine: in it Garbo looks very womanly, her secret wish all these years being to be and feel herself as a woman.
