...feel good, fun to watch and not to be taken too seriously, Quartet will leave a smile on your face. The cast is brimming with famous faces, and the idea of a retirement home for singers and musicians is all a bit silly, but for this gentle, happy tale it works quite well.

Wilf (Billy Connolly) is the naughty boy of the class, and, to an extent, steals the show, certainly early on. Pauline Collins is slightly senile but delightfully innocent Cecily, and Reggie (Tom Courtenay) is their long time friend, and he is mortified to discover the new arrival at the home is his long lost ex, Jean (Maggie Smith).

The stage is set for a reunion between the long estranged couple, but all, of course, does not proceed smoothly. It is a bit of a flag flying propaganda film for the over sixties/seventies, keeping in vogue with the recent, very enjoyable 'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel', and it is a good film to watch.

The cast all seemed to get in the spirit of their parts, and a commendable debut as director for Dustin Hoffman, along with a beautiful setting. Good fun.
