Review of Pursuit of Happyness (2005) by Bill D — 23 May 2012
A better title for this movie would have been "The Pursuit of Money(... in a White Man's World"). This story is incredible because it is supposedly a true story that takes place in the richest country in the world, the USA.
It could never happen in Canada and probably most industrialized countries because there is no way that a guy would work for free for months on end, in the hopes of getting a good job with the possibility of getting nothing.
There are laws against that in countries other than the US of A. I see no redemption in this movie. What about the 30 other suckers who are competing with Smith to get the job and end up with nothing? Are we supposed to champion Smith over all others who are just as desperate? I actually found the cutthroat Survivor mentality in the employment pool revolting especially when the backstabbing is encouraged by the potential employer.
The triumph of success in the face of adversity message is lost in this winner takes all story. If there is a message to be gained from this movie it is that a little socialism is a very good thing.
