Review of Purple Rain (1984) by Aaron B — 02 Dec 2009
So I haven't seen this in probably a decade and a half. Maybe even more than that. I love Princes music, but if you have ever been subjecte to Graphitti Bridge than you are going to be hesitant of ever watching Prince on screen again.
However, I found the movie in a two pack DVD with Fame ( guess what movie I review next?) for only 2.00 so I figured what the hell. I know it isn't as bad as Graphitti Bridge.
Now when I was fouteen this movie was just the coolest thing to come down the pike. Now I can see why. It has great music these songs ( with the exception of "Computer Blue " hold up very well, but in defense of that song, it was supposed to signify "The Kids" spiral downward. It also had a topless Apollonia, and wat 14 year old boy would hate that. Actually the 39 year old boy liked it also.
The story is pedestrian at best, although it has to get credit for allwing the hero of the film be a little less than honerable. His Father is abusive to his Mother and much to the Kids dismay he finds that he has some of the same abusive tendencies.
The acting almost derails themovie. I am not so much talking about Prince and his band, it can somewhat be forgiven for them, they were not professional actors. Then again neither was David Bowie when he was in Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrance. Morris Day however looks like a natural in front of the camera.
It isn't the greatest of movies, and it does wear the eighties excess on its sleeve, but it also makes you yearn for that time agai, when we were just having fun.
