Review of Puppet Master 4 (1993) by Tim S — 08 Nov 2012
Being the fourth film in a series of films about killer puppets, you'd think that Puppet Master 4 wouldn't have taken such a dramatic turn this soon in the series. Making them the good guys seems like a desperate act to come up with something new at the end of a successful run of films to keep a series going.
At least it feels that way to me. There's a lot of ridiculous schlock in this one; so much of it that it's hard to believe. The story is that a young scientist discovers the puppets' secret to life and attempts to help them when they're threatened by underworld forces.
This would probably have worked had it been the final film in the series, because the guy becomes the new puppet master, but there's so many things in there that make it ridiculous. These dolls are meant to be creepy and weird, so there's absolutely no suspense at all because of the direction it takes.
I'm curious what could be done in the following films now that they've let the cat out of the bag. Will it be as bad as this one? We'll see. They filmed these back to back so I don't doubt it.
