Review of Punch-Drunk Love (2002) by Alvin Y — 14 Jun 2011
At least Adam Sandler made a good movie this time, not a corny comedy or a unpleasing gag romantic comedy. Think about all other Sandler movies, this one is far by his best, also including "Spanglish", and "Reign over me", but those 2 are also not my favorite but they're also good, so does this film as well, not my favorite but a big accomplishment to both Sandler and Thomas Anderson. This is a comedy drama, and I'm glad, not those very predictable or very formulaic romance that we have seen also in some Sandler films. His character Barry is a self-centered, childish angry person, who can just smash and break everything with no reason at all, until he mets Lena, then the show stops and becomes a slight reverse romance, why reverse? Because this is more of like Lena is the one who is wooing Barry to become friends or even yet lovers. And also I'm glad they never argue or fight to each other AND, she never found out about this sex call that Barry called, and another dissapointment to him, they got his Credit card number and some guys want to kill him. Holy shoot, he's he in trouble? And so Barry and Lena become lovers still until the end. This is however my problem, it could have shown some more great scenes like, knowing and seeing those 7 sisters of Sandler more, knowing as well Lena more than what we know. Strange it is ehh.. So does this film.
I could also agree more about this film as the best of all Sandler films out there. And to all that he became a leading lady, that Lena is the one that I think best than other Sandler's ladies, because she is a simple, quiet, kind, and unpredictable, you won't know what she will do to him after all that he's done to himself. And probably this should have been titled, "Punch a drunk Adam Sandler, Love (your name)"!!!
