A masterful portrayal of an awkward, disturbed man who finds an odd kind of love with a woman who seemingly is drawn to the damaged goods type. Adam Sandler is surprisingly competent in a role unlike anything he's ever done before, while Emily Watson and Philip Seymour Hoffman are outstanding as always.

Some elements of the story, particularly the protagonist's resolution of a conflict with some thugs who use a phone sex business as a shakedown operation, seem a bit forced and rushed, but all in all a terrific and unique romance with several indelible scenes.

Paul Thomas Anderson shows again that he is one of America's finest movie makers, even when he's keeping it short and simple.
