Review of Punch-Drunk Love (2002) by Brandon W — 12 Jan 2015
New review: When I typed a review for Punch-Drunk Love, it was all from what I remember of it and didn't watch it for a long time when I typed it. So this time, I actually watched it, and it's an odd masterpiece for me. It's still my favorite Adam Sandler movie to date, and it's so weird that Paul Thomas Anderson would even want to make a film with Adam Sandler, and he pretty much saw something in him that a lot of viewers didn't and it shows potential for him after this film. It's nicely shot, it's very funny and didn't realize that it was a dark comedy. The chemistry between Barry and Lena is really good and is something that I quite haven't seen before in this kind of style. The characters are really good, and Philip Seymour Hoffman is amazing in this. It's kind of sad that we are probably not going to have a film like this with Adam Sandler in, perhaps, a long time.
Old review: I thought it was very odd that Paul Thomas Anderson is making a movie with Adam Sandler and make it a drama which Adam Sandler never done before, but Punch-Drunk-Love turns out to be my favorite Adam Sandler movie. It's an odd film, but it works for me and Adam Sandler is really good which is a bit rare when his later films, are really bad. I really want to see more of him doing more drama films, but so far we got this and Reign Over Me. I like the chemistry between Adam Sandler and Emily Watson and the dialog. The movie has funny moments too, but it's focused more on the drama than the comedy which I think there should be a bit more of comedy and it would've been a perfect film. But as is, Punch-Drunk-Love is almost a flawless film, yet very underrated, that made me appreciate Adam Sandler as an actor. 4 and a half out of 5 stars.
