Review of Punch-Drunk Love (2002) by Vasco M — 19 Jul 2015
This will be a controversial opinion with many PT Anderson fans, but thus far this remains my favorite of his films. The idea of casting Adam Sandler and Emily Watson as lovers is surreal in and of itself. And the idea of having Sandler play repressed man who seems to be on the verge of a deeply violent and dangerous nervous breakdown is brilliant.
Sadly, this movie flopped big time. Though I ended up paying to see it several times after seeing it at the Toronto Film Festival.
Though the impact is now dated, Anderson utilized and merged NY Artist, Jeremy Blake's video work into the film itself creates a magical sort of realism to everything. Once again, Anderson pays homage to Robert Altman by the use of Shelley Duvall's odd performance of Harry Nilsson's "Popeye" score.
Brilliant, bold and unforgettable.
