Review of Pumpkin (2002) by Gena D — 06 Mar 2009
The kind of movie I WANT to like soooo badly, and yet it constantly undermines itself. At the heart of this film is a beautiful story about taboo love. If Caroline (Ricci) and Pumpkin's relationship had been played as genuine and the film had chosen a more dramatic tone, I would probably love this film.
However, the movie chooses a satirical tone that works completely against the romance that honestly feels WAY more compelling. Add to this inconsistent tone the fact that Caroline's character arc is more like a loop-de-loop and the whole thing just falls apart.
She goes from shallow to deep to shallow to deep to giving up on Pumpkin to following her heart with Pumpkin to giving up again to coming back. It's like the screenwriters ran out of steam and just made her wander.
Unfortunate.
