Review of Psycho III (1986) by Raymond D — 19 Aug 2007
After the surprisingly tense and sophisticated Psycho II, Anthony Perkins directs the rather middling, uninteresting third instalment, and it falls far short of its predecessors. The story just isn't very involving, and since Norman is loopier than ever there's very little dramatic tension about his character.
Perkins, at least, does Norman the typical amount of twitchy justice, but the rest of the cast - including a goofy Jeff Fahey and Diana Scarwid as a thankless Janet Leigh lookalike/suicidal nun - just aren't noteworthy.
Carter Burwell's score sounds like lift music, and despite the higher than usual gore content, none of the deaths elicit any real fear. (Although I won't soon forget the girl murdered on the toilet.
) Simplistic yet muddled, often trying to say something but unsure quite what it is, Psycho III is wholly mediocre slasher fare that cheapens a once quite interesting premise. Rotten with sequilitis.
