Review of Psycho III (1986) by Mike S — 04 Oct 2009
Well this is where the film series started to winder off a bit. Anthony Perkins comes here as director and actor; the good thing about this is that Norman Bates is really explored well here. His innocence, tormen and struggle to stay on the straight and narrow is directed well here; since only Perkins understands the character.
The films biggest flaw is the fact that is has too many storylines going on. One; we have the basic premise, Norman's continuing insanity with Mrs. Spool now stuffed as Mother. Than we have a drifter named Duke who takes up the job Assistant Manager and gets caught up in Norman's insanity. The third story concerns a nun who has left her church in search of answers and falls in love with Norman. Finally the fourth story involves a reporter who is searching for the whereabouts of Mrs. Spool.
With all these storries intertwining its a wonder anyone can make sense of the film.
Jeff Fahey plays Duke and he plays him to be a self sefficiant asshole. He plays it well, but the end of the film makes no sense, he goes mad all of a sudden and there is no explanation for the psychotic break.
The other performances here ok to less than okay. This film is definitely my least favorite, but Anthony Perkins still has a style that works for the film.
2 out of 5.
