Review of Psycho (2007) by Paul R — 24 Jul 2013
Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho is probably his most well known film, mainly down to its greatness. Full to the brim with iconic scenes and sounds, this is a horror movie that has, and will, withstand the test of time.
Marion Crane, fed up with her life and the way she is treated, steals some money and goes on the run to start a new life. After a long drive, tired and almost falling asleep at the wheel she decides to stop for a night at the nearest motel: The Bates Motel. Here she meets a quiet and rather odd young manager, Norman who appears to be rather dominated by his mother who lives in the house next to the motel. Soon Marion realises she may have stopped at the wrong Motel.
Anthony Perkins is superb as Norman Bates. He's perfectly creepy, subtly strange and very unsettling indeed. He manages to be chilling without much actually happening. Psycho is excellently scripted and packed full of mystery and suspense, it is truly one of the best classic Horror films out there. The final closing shot is one of the most unnerving images that I had ever seen when I first saw this film many, many years ago.
When's the last time you saw Psycho? More than likely, far too long ago.
